The
65d Mavericks is a project created by the highly respected Richard Polson
(Founder of the renowned Surface Records and co-founder of Blueprint Records)
and Nick Dunton a producer in his own right, who has worked under many guises
in various different underground scenes over the last decade as well as being
the founder of the innovative Inceptive Records.
Surface
Records has been a stalwart in the techno community for the last 8 years and
has seen appearances by luminaries such as Claude Young, Oliver Ho, Alexander
Kowalski, Surgeon, Regis, James Ruskin, Paul Mac and Oscar Mulero. The recently
launched sister label Inceptive chooses to showcase new and up and coming
talented artists such as Phase, Nick Wilson, Reeko, Hu and Sys-ex.
Together
the Mavericks have maintained a strong musical relationship, which sees them
striving to release forward thinking music on both imprints, as well as
indulging themselves in various forthcoming multimedia projects.
After
meeting at a sound sculpture exhibition held at the ICA in London in the late nineties,
they discussed their varying opinions on the merits of modern music and decided
to work together on occasional projects. These occasional projects soon became
the makings of a great musical partnership, and since then the pair have
recorded and released numerous records under the 65d mavericks guise. (see
discography).
They
have been quoted as saying "The 65d mavericks was never meant to be about
money or conformity but about expressing that which has not yet been expressed,
about music for the mind as well as the dance floor" and judging by some
of there forthcoming projects, for instance their eagerly anticipated album on
their own Surface imprint, they weren't wrong.
The
65d mavericks take it upon themselves to
tailor every live set to each specific gig, if you miss it, it’s gone forever!
By doing this, the crowd always gets fresh music with the occasional classic
from their early recording careers thrown in for good measure. The pair are
extremely well respected by producers and DJ's throughout the electronic music
scene for their no-compromise philosophies, and not only for the records they
create themselves but also the records they choose to release. This would
explain why they have new material forthcoming under The 65d Mavericks guise
for labels such as Tresor, Surface, Lost/Cosmic, Blueprint, Downwards, Theory,
Light and Dark, Warm Up, Influence, Infrastructure, Exist, Deta, Tsunami and
Rodz Konez. The
65d Mavericks music could be described as challenging, but put them in a club
environment with their machines and sparks begin to fly! During a recent gig at
the Milkweg in Amsterdam
the room was being worked so hard that the crowd and even the following DJ
wanted them to keep playing!
They
continue to confuse and bemuse the record buying public by consistently
releasing records under different names in different scenes, but as they said
in a recent interview “a closed mind is like a closed book, just a block of
wood”
The
fact that they limit their live sets to about ten per year, adds to their
enigma, and if anything, creates even more hype. If you are lucky enough to see
them live it is likely to be an experience that you will never forget!e links for more info:
